Black Book

The Black Book of Carmarthen is the earliest manuscript entirely written in the Welsh language. It was compiled by a single person over several decades, collecting together the writer's favourite prayers, as well as much older bardic works from several centuries earlier.
I chose to explore the nature of writing, time, continuity, and language by combining fragments of the manuscript text with some of my own old prints. Exploring how the voice of the scribe, the voice of the artist, can be found and lost, how it continues through centuries, how it colours and affects all those who see it, locked in time and timeless.
These are the first few pieces gathered together for an extended layering of image, word, and media, with translated fragments and my own new texts.
