(Un)Conscious and the Spaces Between

The human consciousness essentially evolves from the depths of the unconscious. In turn, the subconscious holds the vast accumulation of our memories born out of our conscious experiences. The liminal spaces between our conscious and our unconscious signify the gaps which are filled with our perceptions of reality. The same realities which are made up of our experiences and are stored in our memories are often forgotten, but ever-present. Certain triggers bring forth these thoughts and emotions from the subconscious and into consciousness in a constant flux of repression and expression.

Wood was used as living medium and as a symbolic representation of the consciousness. Bleeding from the wooden sculptures are ceramic pieces which mimic ‘bruises’. These depict the markings left behind in the memory that are created from lived experiences. Not only do they speak of physical and mental trauma, but they also point to the fact that these ‘bruises’ are in a constant state of healing. However, some never heal at all and leave deep physical impressions in the psyche. By creating these abstract pieces, we can come to acknowledge these repressed emotions. This entire therapeutic process can then act as an outlet for the subconscious whilst simultaneously healing the mind through the processes of creativity and psychotherapy.
