The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid is a fairytale story about the little mermaid princess full of a beautiful fantasy of prince and human world. However, when she abandons everything and risks her life to the human world, she finds that everything there is different from the bottom of the sea where she has been living. The design will also connect with my life experience, as an immigrant from China to the United States. Living between the two countries, I feel loneliness, outsider, abandoned, gloomy, fearful while struggling with different languages, cultures, and lifestyles of the two different countries. I want to express the two cultures in my book by mixing Chinese and English.
At the start of each chapter, I mixed the Chinese number and the English number to show the differences with the Arabic numerals to show the connection between two worlds. The Chinese number is in red, which is the representative color from the Chinese flag and the English in black. Use black and red color in a white background creates a sharp contrast.
The dual language book by using English and Chinese expresses the difference between two different worlds.
The book will use simple design with red, black, and white colors, with English/Chinese to create a feel of differentness.
