This is a question about the confusion surrounding us. A question about the fear of a pandemic or about the pandemic of fear. The rise of panic amidst the rise of a virus. The former being way more severe.
Fear is an emotion that comes from threat. And threat is instilled in our minds through ideas. Ideas of what can be, and what shall be. The potential of an idea is enormous. It has the power to define us or to destroy us. And it is unfortunate that we are the children of social platforms which have connected lots of people and lots of ideas, without a filter system. We consume ideas, without being consciously aware of it.
And in times like these, when two million are battling a disease, the rest of the world, seven billion of us are infected with irrational ideas and outsized fear. The ideas birthed out of fiction, the memes that show us the worst of this situation. They have contributed to a damage that cannot be undone.
Our survival instincts have kicked in and we are obsessed with the virus. Engaging with the news that is also cashing off fear. What is the problem? The shortage of ration; eggs, milk and bread. People dying of hunger and those already dead. The stocking of masks and hand sanitizers. And the medics without safety equipment, more scared than they appear.
Our misguided reactions are triggering a crisis within a crisis. And in extreme fear we are all losing compassion.
Start filtering your ideas and take conscious control of your emotions. Do not let panic be an unchecked reaction. This awareness in itself is an antidote to the contagion- both the contagions.
