Henri Matisse, The Sheaf

The art movement that I chose was abstract expressionism. The reason why I chose this movement was because of the colors and the simple or very in the spot shapes and colors. Abstract expressionism is a type of painting where it shows more emotions and feelings. It’s a type of art movement where you can express your feelings with simple shags and brush strokes. I chose Henri Matisse and his painting “The Sheaf” because it is able to show a complexity of colors, but it does not necessarily need to be complex. It is simple in every aspect, the colors and the shapes are bold and not really mixed. Henri Matisse seems to not blend his colors together with each other, which is something very special about his paintings.

My art piece is very much similar to Matisse’s painting. Something different from mine could be that I only use two colors, but several tones. I used the colors white and blue. My painting is more leaned on the abstract side. Not realistic. There is some contrast, because I only use two colors and the color values are every different making them contrast more. My art is connected to Matisse’s painting in a way where I use simple shapes to express a plant. In Matisse painting he uses more color but I decided to use one main color and expand in its color value scale.

My idea in my painting was to show a coral reef. In my painting I wanted to express how we need to protect our coral reefs. I made my coral reefs white because white is a clean color and it seems pure, so when using that color it represents how we should clean our oceans. In Matisse’s painting he uses several colors, showing the colorfulness of an object. Colors stand for some emotions, so when choosing the colors he did he might be showing people is emotions. Something very different from my painting and Matisse is the amount of color and the main point. When looking at Matisse’s painting more thoughts pass our head but my painting is more of a simple story.
