Sustainable Eating Public Service Announcement

For this project, I wanted to create a public service announcement about the damages of wasting food because I do no think that the subject of eating sustainably is addressed enough. In order to successfully do this, I first created my illustrations. I made a trash bin in order to be the focus of the piece. I filled the trash bin in order to show the extent to which people are wasting their food. I then illustrated hands scraping a plate of basically untouched food into the trash bin. This demonstrates how people sometimes get food out and waste all of it without thinking about the consequences of their actions. Under the trash bin I illustrated a bunch of hands reaching in the air. The hands symbolize the amount of people who need the food that are being wasted and have none. The grey background of the illustration I made is so I do not distract from my illustration—I used a neutral, light color to do this. I placed a white border around the image in order to work with my type placement. The typeface I used for the word “damage” is porter because it is extremely heavy, modern looking, and sans serif. This makes it stand out. In addition, I made the typeface red so that it stood out over the rest of the image. I used the words “know your damage” as an attention getter because it emphasizes the severity of the situation that the world is in right now. The word damage is very serious and does not beat around the bush. I extended the word damage past the border because I think it adds dimension and visual hierarchy to the page. I also think that by placing the word damage behind the illustration but in front of the border, it engages with the elements of the page while acting as the focal point. Lastly, I wrote “be better. Think before you waste” in a curved form in the trash bin because it calls out to my audience what action they should take to make the earth a better place. I also used the eyedropper tool for the color of the text so that the food from the trash led the eye to my callout.
