Florida resident Edwin Hammond Meredith possesses a lifelong love of animals. Edwin Hammond Meredith raises horses and provides a safe home for rescued dogs and ferrets.

Besides cats and dogs, ferrets are also popular pets in many states. Since ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years, they are well-suited for living indoors and have many desirable qualities such as playfulness and an even temperament. Modern domesticated ferrets descend from European polecats. It is believed they were first tamed by the Ancient Egyptians more than 3,000 years ago.

In the 1st century, Roman soldiers transported ferrets to the United Kingdom. A thousand years later, French conquers used trained ferrets to chase mice and rabbits. During Queen Victoria’s reign in the late-19th-century, ferrets became popularized as pets. After centuries of domestication, ferrets have become very dependent on humans. Due to a lack of instincts, pet ferrets cannot survive longer than a few days in the wild.
