Public BBQ Redesign
Brisbane City Council
This project tasked us with the redesign of the current Australian public barbeques. We tackled this design problem by making the BBQ a more large element. We also added interchangeable components such as a Wok butane burner and a functioning sink. These two components could be swapped or removed by the districts council as the population's needs change. Keeping in line with the diversity of Australia is was important for both us and the client that this table fill the functional needs of many users groups. Large surface space and various interchangeable components were two effective yet cheap ways that my team saw as a solution.
The CAD/3D modeling of the project was the most time consuming task. My team wanted to make sure that the BBQ was not only manufacturable to Australian food grade standards but also that all the sheet metal and components could be easily cut and transported to site. As you can see from the bill of materials below there were many components that went into the project. Many off market but many that were costume built. The hotplates, sink and butane modules were all modeled to fit by my team and I.
We were also tasked with producing a full scale model for presentation. The frame was a combination of plywood and cardboard sheet that was stabled and spray painted to fit the aesthetic we wanted. All the components other than the sink were created using a CNC foam cutter and stickers were printed in order to represent the controls as well as the warning labels required of such a product. The sink was created using a laser cutter in order to create a mesh that was glued. This was because we required more depth in the sink that in the foam pieces and the readily available CNC machine did not have the depth we required. The sink was then powder counted to give it a nice industrial finish.
