Conference Talk Booklet Design

Booklet

Designing this booklet created multiple new challenges for me. I've been working with type and focusing on scale and the message it communicates in other projects, but this project stretched me to further explore leading, kerning, grids, and margins. As I changed one element in the booklet, I had to consider how it would effect other layouts. I was especially worried about widows, orphans, and creating flow within this document. I read through the entire content to make sure the text was connected to the images used on the page, and flowed well throughout the piece.

I started this project with pencil sketches, trying to get an idea of where to place content on the page as well as how much content I had to work with. I wanted the pages to have some variety from page to page so it could hold the readers interest, while communicating the theme of the talk. Next, I started to enter the content into digital sketches and see how much space I would need for the talk and how I could add images to help break up the text. I started with a four column layout, but after a suggestion from my professor, changed it to a 5 column layout which worked much better for the layout I had in mind.

I changed the size and location of images, changed between a single and double column, as well as the color, and font size of the text multiple times. Using paragraph styles helped me format the content whenever I made those changes.

For the cover of my conference booklet, I wanted to use an image that would wrap around both the front and back cover. While considering what image to use, I wanted it to reflect the content of the booklet, provide an interesting background, and depict a sense of peace. After working through some different ideas for the cover, I think the white font against the blue and purple colors from the image provides good contrast. The center alignment of the title and author provide a good focal point for the page.

I am happy with my completed booklet. I think it has variety and consistency in the design that tie all of the pages together and help communicate the message of the content without distracting from it. I learned a lot about formatting type in this project and look forward to using those skills as I continue to learn more.
