A Typographic History

Map of a typographic history (1803-1948)
This assignment was very fun to put together, while also being a very tough thing to do. Learning about our history, and the history of type is one thing that I very much enjoy. I spent hours upon hours researching for this project. I knew a lot of things that happened in my time period (1803-1948) but I also learned a lot as well. I learned a lot about typography itself, about its creators, and about the inventions made to use the type. I also learned that this was the time when women started to gain ground with men, not just in the suffragist movements, but also in the world of type and graphic design. They are the founding mothers for people like myself and my feminine classmates.

While I had a lot of fun with this project, I also struggled a lot. Coming up with the layout of the timeline was a very big struggle for me. When making timelines in the past, I would just use a straight line and some callouts. For this project, I had to take my knowledge in graphic design and impliment in into the timeline, so that it wasn’t just a flat peice of paper. I had to give my timeline life. I also struggled with how much information to put in the timeline as well. There weren’t a lot of type or font inventions in the early parts of my timeline, and I didnt want to put too much world history in it, so I had to compromise to two facts per page. This ended up working in my favor, I believe. Overall, I liked this project, even if I struggled a bit.

I used this website to help me with what typefaces that were in my timeline. I needed to know when and what the font was, and I needed to know who created them. This really helped me with getting all of my facts correct on my timeline. Without this, I would have been in a lot of trouble.

This website really helped me with the actually history that happened in my tine period. I knew a lot, because it wa 1803-1948, but I still needed help on when exactly things happened. The facts on this site helped me with what I should put into my timeline, and how many years I should skip before putting another piece of history.“U.S. History Timeline: A New Nation - 1800–1849.”

Garfield, Simon. Just My Type: a Book about Fonts. Gotham Books, 2012.
This book taught me more about the specific fonts in my timeline. For example, I learned a lot about the font Times New Roman. All of the facts in here helped me with what I could put on my timeline. Lupton, Ellen. Thinking with Type: a Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students. Princ-eton Architectural Press, 2010.This book really helped me with how I thought about type and my design. I put a lot of work into this timeline, and this book helped me see things with an almost new eye. It taught me how type could become the image, that I didnt need to find a picture online to get my point accross.
