Grayscale Painting
In my junior year of high school (2018) I took Painting 1 and one of the projects was to paint in grayscale while considering value and contrast.
Of the pictures I had on my phone, I chose the one above due to the contrast created by the shadows and the detailed reflections in the sunglasses. I have struggled with portraits so I thought that it would be a nice challenge to paint a human subject.
I began my painting first with a sketch of the the figures and sunglasses. I then painted the background to establish what would be my lightest grey on the grey scale. While working on my piece I struggled most with making the right grey to match the photograph as well as the proportions of the nose and sunglasses. I painted in sections (i.e. neck, forehead, face, sunglasses) and constantly checked the contrast of the light and dark grays.
