Benefits of Peer-to-Peer Tutoring
Charter school educator and administrator Caitlin Franco launched the Equality Charter School with the mission of supporting the academic achievement of scholars from all backgrounds. As the director for Equality Charter School, Caitlin Franco oversees the school’s special education program, which serves between 20 to 30 percent of all students. In addition to counseling and individualized support, peer-to-peer tutoring is an integral component of the special education program.

Peer-to-peer tutoring programs match high achieving students with classmates or younger students who are struggling with a specific subject or overall study skills. Since peer tutors are often reviewing the same material they have learned themselves, the tutoring process supports the learning of both participants.

Additionally, both parties can receive social and emotional benefits. Students with disabilities or special learning needs may be more responsive to instructors who are closer to their age and may develop friendships outside of the program.

Further, working with a peer can help improve important communication and social interaction skills which will serve the student in the classroom and beyond. Likewise, the peer tutor will gain a better understanding of the challenges their classmates face and learn valuable skills for collaborating successfully with different personalities.
