Character Design
This project is a self initiated illustration based project. It is a character design focused project that represents characters from Marathi literature. Purushottam Lakshman Deshpande was a writer, theatre actor, film actor, music composer, harmonium player, stand up story teller, singer and much more. P.L. Deshpande is a personality who’s books I grew up reading, who’s movies amused me, who’s audio records fascinated me.

Every time I listened to his humorous yet meaningful stories, the characters in it revealed a new colour of their personality. That’s how the characters took shape in my head. And I took it forward.

Other than my own interest in this subject, objective of this project is to promote famous characters by P.L. Deshpande, the legend in Marathi literature to today’s generation, who can be disconnected from Marathi literature.
The project is also for P.L. Deshpande followers to recollect his literature.
FIRST CHARACTER

Sakharam Gatne
Sakharam Gatne is a 16 years old studious boy.
His story takes place in 1960s where he is preparing for his final high school examination.(SSC)
He is a skinny fellow bent with the weight of books he always likes to carry around. His tiny eyes always look a little scared.

Sakharam is a highly intellectual bookish boy who is bookworm. He is deeply passionate about literature and likes collecting signatures of his favourite authors as a hobby. He has a habit of constantly reciting lines from several books as
he speaks.

SECOND CHARACTER

Raosaheb

Raosaheb is from Belgaum, a small town on the border of two states, Maharashtra and Karnataka. This small town has both Marathi (People from the sate of Maharashtra) and Kannadiga (People from the state of Karnataka) living together. Their scuffles is what this town is known for! Rao Saheb’s dialect is a sweet mixture of languages from both the sates.

He owns a cinema hall in Belgaum. Ironically this owner of the cinema hall has never seen a film.
His true love lies in theatre. He is a big fan of Indian classical music.

He is a care free and self willed man. He laughs from the bottom of his heart. He has the ability to laugh even in the toughest situation. He uses a lot of slang but he is so pure at heart that even his swearing doesn’t insult. This tough looking guy is just an innocent and sensitive child at heart. His intentions are always crystal clear and he is forthright and straightforward
to his friends. His friends mean a lot to him.

He is a very social and friendly man. He comes from a very wealthy family. Every evening different professionals, artists and intellects from various fields gather together to chat and sing. It is always that by the end of these sessions,
Raosaheb’s enigmatic character takes hold of everyone.

But even in this scramble, Raosahib feels lonely sometimes. He has no one of his own, no one except his dog Jimmy.
On blue days like this, Raosaheb plays with his dog to shake off this feeling of solitude.
