Rogue One Movie Poster

Let me start off by saying this is UNOFFICIAL Star Wars art I produced as practice for my digital painting class. I was VERY excited to be working on a Star Wars-based project to design a mock movie poster based on the franchise. Moreover- I was VERY happy with how the end result turned out. As I'm still learning the ropes of digital painting (who isn't?) this project marked a huge step forward for me in the kind of work I was generating. Here's a little bit about my process:
First, the thumbnails. I chose to make a poster for Rogue One. It's one of the movies that are more of an outlier to the main prequel, original, and sequel trilogies, so I thought it would be a more unique and fun project to work on it. Some thumbs are decent, some are not, (it happens) but I found a composition I really liked, tweaked it until I was happy, and went for it.
Next came nailing down the drawing and layering in some values.
Then began refinement.
After working out the composition and values and getting a good start on adding in the details, I wanted to figure out how I would approach color. So I turned to one of the illustrative gods of Star Wars poster art: Drew Struzan.
I thought it would be a good challenge for me to go in with his vibrant colors and disregard a more local-colored scheme. It helped me to think more about color-temperature within light and shadow and also felt like a good homage to the original trilogy.
And there we have it- the final outcome. Having the time limit we did, there are some things I want to adjust that I couldn't quite get to, but overall, I'm happy with the result!
