Romanticising the Struggle
This piece I created for the NITG (Night In The Garden) exhibition titled Black by Popular Demand. I re-imagined the idea of the Disney Movie Up (2009) about a 78-year-old balloon salesman, who is about to fulfill a lifelong dream. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, then he flies away to the South American wilderness. I thought of the same concept however instead of flying away to the wilderness, one escapes away from poverty and the everyday struggles of the majority of Black South Africans. I called it Romanticising the Struggle to play with the idea of making poverty/the struggle unrealistically seem better or more appealing than it really is.
