Jorge Dominguez's profile

Latin America Reference Work Offers New Focus on Intern

As Harvard University’s Antonio Madero Professor for the Study of Mexico from 2006 to 2018, the widely published scholar Jorge Dominguez, PhD, taught and researched a range of issues pertaining to recent political and economic history in Latin America. Dr. Jorge Dominguez’s books include The Routledge Handbook of Latin America in the World, which he co-edited and whose first edition appeared in 2015.

This nearly 500-page reference work garnered praise from top review journals, including CHOICE, which reviews titles intended for academic libraries, and the magazine Foreign Affairs, whose reviewer called it a “magnificent” achievement, notably in its ability to fill in the still-large gaps in scholarly understanding of the foreign policies of this diverse and fast-developing region.

The 30 essays in the work are distinguished by their precision of detail and illuminate the individual policies and practices of all the major nations in the region. The essay authors and editors paid particular attention to urgent 21st century issues such as human rights, migration, multilateral agreements, and national and international policies on the environment.

Other reviews cited the book as not only a solid source for information on the numerous and often-staggering ways in which Latin American societies have transformed themselves in light of emerging challenges, but also a repository of some of the most incisive thinking on the region’s new role on the international stage.
