NEXT 2013: God's Country

  • This project is a sociological exploration of increasing isolation and identity in the midst of highly-connected state, national and global communities. It is a story about Lauri Lappi, a first generation American born Upper Peninsula resident. As Lauri ages, the Lappi family must grapple with the hardship of taking care of an elder.

I embedded myself with this family for three months. I visited Lauri Lappi everyday for two months. I walked into his house and I quietly prayed I would not find him dead. Inevitably, I found him sleeping on the couch, splayed out straight - evenly distributing his weight on each tattered cushion. A tugged blanket from over the back of the sofa made a small tent over half of his sunken body.
