Greg Opinski's profile

The Role of Carpentry in Construction

The founder and president of OP Development, Greg Opinski previously devoted a quarter century to developing his own construction company in Merced, California. At the height of its operations, Greg Opinski Construction, Inc., generated some $35 million in annual sales, working with 25 staff members. A second-generation construction industry leader, Mr. Opinski learned carpentry under the mentorship of his father.

Experts point out that carpentry is one of the foundational bodies of knowledge vital to success in construction. An experienced, credentialed carpenter is able to fashion and install beams, door frames, and staircases; lay down floor treatments; build cabinets and entire kitchen areas; and carry out a wide range of other remodeling and reconstruction projects. Individual carpenters may concentrate on commercial or residential work, or on particular types of tasks, such as historic restoration or kitchen remodeling.

Successful carpenters have mastered the use of a range of tools and appliances. They have a finely developed sense of design and detail, and a good head for mathematics. Strength and dexterity, as well as the ability to communicate ideas clearly, are other essential skills.
