Idea of Women in Contemporary India

Idea of Women in Contemporary India
According to me a contemporary Indian woman is someone who is stuck in a state between being modern and traditional. She has her own ideas but has to stand by the standards of the society which are mostly based on what they see or are made to see. As a result, she ends up confused and lost. Therefore, visual culture plays a major role in how we perceive ourselves in today’s world. For example, a bangle is symbolic of traditional, whereas an eyebrow piercing is considered modern. All these presumptions are based on the visual culture which has been built around us over the period of time.
My project aims at the struggle a woman goes through, as a part of contemporary India, in the search for her own identity. It is an evolution in itself. To break the boundaries and explore the layers of her true self, and eventually finding who she really is. I have clicked a series of ten photographs which show this journey in a continuous visual narrative.
A contemporary Indian woman sees herself stuck in between two completely different states of existence, modern and traditional. She does everything that makes her a blend of both……
……But she ends up confused and lost in the process. She wants to do what she wishes, but has to listen to the society. Has freedom, but is told to stay in her limits. Speaks her mind, but fears what the listeners might think…..
In the process of trying to escape this void of confusion she sees hope in all the chaos and takes the path of transition and self introspection. Her aim to forget her artificial identity based on the expectations of the society is finally accomplished and she……
……leaves whatever binds her and puts her into categories.
She finds herself, her true self….
