Defrock is a work inspired by Michel Foucault's description of power as "only tolerable when it masks a substantial part of itself. It’s success is proportional to its ability to hide its own mechanisms."
To expose or reveal the mechanisms of a power seemingly greater than us, is to remove all of its power. In this case, the ghostly and giant velvet phallus stands in the corner hovering above ground assuming its power over the spectator. But the spectator is invited to penetrate through the opening atop the sculpture and pull out something of its contents. What is revealed/recovered is a toy penis made of felt and stuffed cotton. Spectators are invited to interact with the piece and contribute to the defrocking of a power source.
