These tiles are impression molds made from charred logs cast in plaster and colored using acrylic paints and wood ash. I enjoy working with wood and experimenting with different manners of highlighting its natural character and beauty.
In the process of creating these, samples of wood were collected from several local species of trees including Birch, Alder, Spruce, willow, and chokecherry. The wood was burned using a torch until there was a thick layer of char and large fractures had formed in the grain. The surface layer of char was gently removed using a wire brush and saved for future use. The Pieces with the best character were used to create the impression molds and cast in the plaster tiles. Once dry, the tiles were painted using acrylic paints and the ash removed from the burnt wood to give a genuine coloration.
