Typology - Classification of Typefaces

The objective of this project is to examine the specific design requirements of book design. It explores how grid systems are used to organise large amounts of content. Typographic hierarchies aim to aid readability and make information accessible. The Type Specimen expands on the book and connects with the design of the inside pages. It is a ‘collectable’ type specimen. Cover and binding is developed through self directed research.
I have used section sewn - kettle stitch - binding to connect the Book and Specimen, done by hand.

The Type Specimen, Acumin Pro, is a versatile neo-grotesque. With a broad family of 90 typefaces, it has its own personality and is not an imitation or variation of previous dominant neo-grotesques such as Helvetica or Univers. Influenced by Swiss Design, the sans-serif typography, grids and asymmetrical layout eliminates distractions for the viewer and allows the information-heavy design to be read and studied rather than merely seen and admired. I have chosen to use the combination of typography and photography as a means of visual communication, in relation to Acumin’s designer Robert Slimbach taking inspiration from observing what he saw “around town”: how neo-grotesque typefaces were used in his everyday environment. The uncoated paper stock, hand sewn binding and use of orange brings a subtle humanity to the architectural and modular form.
