Hopewell Trail: a narrative of fire in the landscape

This project received the OLIN Award for Best Capstone Project 2012.

My capstone thesis addressed historic interpretation, visitation, community relations and sustainability at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site. The design was informed by the historic use of fire within the landscape which illustrates a compelling narrative about the relationship between man and nature. Points along the trail allow visitors to discover the connections between culture, industry and ecology. Various mediums such as art installations, signage, plantings, and a mobile digital application provide a wide and dynamic range of experiences along the trail.

A site design was created for the trailhead at Hopewell Furnace NHS. The design explores the many cycles that color the history of the landscape and the industry that presided there. Landform and vegetation are manipulated  to create an experiential gateway to welcome visitors and knit together the park and the trail system.
The design includes an interpretive mobile application that could be used by visitors on personal smart phones or devices could be borrowed at either Hopewell or St. Peters Trailhead. The application is intended to offer more detail about the history that is presented at each point of interest.
