Vandalised monuments IV by Jose Carlos Martinats

eva International (formerly ev+a) is an artist-centred biennial exhibition of visual art that works with acclaimed guest curators to present innovative exhibitions across the city of Limerick, Ireland. Artists’ projects are selected through an international “open call” for proposals and exhibitions take place in both gallery and non-gallery spaces.
In March 2012, I was approached to fabricate a sculpture for peruvian born artist Jose Carlos Martinat. The initial design was a sketch-up model of 12 iconic Irish buildings, stacked on one another sometimes on their side, sometimes up-side down. The site for the piece was on the 10th floor of Riverpoint Towers, Limerick overlooking the river Shannon.
The 3d model needed to be deconstructed and rationalised into a built object. The main structure was separated from the facade details which were CNC cut by a local kitchen door manufacturer. The entire piece was constructed from mdf and then finished in white paint. Where possible all structural elements were to be concealed.
