The color scheme is a mixture of warm and cool colors. The use of purple and yellow is a complimentary color scheme. The artist found a way to create shadows using single values with no gradient on the figure of the man. The shapes with thick lines create some contrast, but not too much as the artist is trying to recreate the natural shift in values that shadows normally cast on a face.
