"Made in England" – British Skinhead Zine

This was a booklet made for my module Word & Image, which focuses primarily on the relationship between words and imagery. The aim is to develop an awareness of how verbal- textual and graphic elements interact to create meaning in graphic communication. I will have to consider what visual-compositional relationships mean within graphic design and ask what pure text can ‘say and communicate’ whilst also thinking about the role images can play. What happens, for example, when these are combined or separated? Can text be image? Can image be text?

The skinhead culture and era of the 70s and 80s is a sparse topic that to a lot of people isn’t properly understood. Therefore due to my own interest, the history, visual potential and the literature on the subject, I chose to revolve my design visual around it. Showing how right- wing politics crept into the culture and changed people’s perception.

"MADE IN ENGLAND" is a brief visual account of the Skinhead culture.
