SUSTAINABLE COFFEE

Tico Coffee, a new venture in Costa Rica, is a company that takes advantage of the country's unique soil to produce and sell a high-quality artisan roasted coffee. The coffee, exclusively produced in Costa Rica, comes from certified organic and fair-trade sources and is also packaged in a biodegradable bag. Besides wanting to keep the high quality of their products, Tico Coffee wants their consumers to have a unique product, so each flavor is produced in limited batches which will also be hand-signed by the roast master.

The client wanted for the package to communicate a "high-quality and organic" feeling, so the solution was inspired in the use of design principles based in sustainable design to further convey the organic and environmental-friendly personality of the product. Another requirement was that the visual design, while maintaining a unified look throughout all products, had to be easy to adapt to other flavors and/or regions (either from Costa Rica or from other countries).

UNIQUE ORIGINS

What makes every coffee unique is the soil from where it came from. This idea is what the final design aimed to translate in a visual manner. To give personality and instant recognition to each flavor, the shape (in a handmade style) of the region where the coffee beans came from was used. Combined with the name of the bean's origin in a simple but modern and eye-catching typography, each package becomes unique in itself. Just like the coffee.

Through the use of these elements and a color identification system, a unified product architecture that is easy to recognize and to expand was created.

The graphic solution also uses the printing material to its advantage. By showing the raw color of the material the product accomplishes 2 things:
- A more organic and sustainable look while also maintaining a high-quality feel given by the used graphic elements.
- Minimize the use of ink during the printing process, thus meeting a one of the criteria for a sustainable
packaging.

Another attribute of the package is that, in the back of it we gave the consumer some ideas of how to give a new life to it.
