Changed Perception I

Research paper for my final Masters project

My final major project for the MA Graphic Branding and Identity concentrated on the field of study about perception. The art of observation and truly mindfully seeing has become a rare talent. In fact, the attentional resources of the human mind are very limited, which means that people can only process a small amount of information. The mind does not have the capacities to perceive everything and anything which is why people have to filter their attention in order to notice the things they conceive as important. People mostly just see what they are looking for or what they are expecting to see. They only notice the things that are relevant to them in that very moment and all the rest goes unnoticed. Yet, I wonder why some things are considered to be worthier of our attention whereas others just get ignored. What is it that we are missing out on while “sleepwalking”? Why are we showing so little interest in the most obvious things? Couldn’t the ordinary and familiar be the most interesting?

My point of interest is to explore a reversed attention in the context of the city of London by focusing on familiar everyday objects, which are usually oblivious for us. My results led me to the development and concept of my final brand 'Atypical Perspectives', an unusual tour guide series.
