Hot Air Balloon Illustration

Hot Air Balloon Illustration
I did this illustration as a project in my illustration concepts class. We were to illustrate a vehicle of some sort. I had seen a certain style that I had been wanting to try for awhile that looked like it came out of the 1930s when they did not have as vibrant designs, the style was more muted. The illustration that inspired me is the first photo below with the elephants and hot air balloons. I am really pleased with how this illustration came out. I feel like it definitely is very different from works I have done in the past.
The Process
The process is always a critical stage for my illustrations. I find it easier to try different approaches on a smaller version of my sketches before actually coloring the final piece.
Design References
While looking through difference photos and illustrations, I found that I liked the colors used in the blue and white hot air balloon illustration and the style in the first illustration I mentioned earlier. In order to do the fog and clouds in my illustration I had to learn how to draw them. I used John Muir's online tutorial: Drawing Rising Mist with Graphite Pencil. Even though this tutorial was for graphite pencil, the technique still helped me with my colored pencil illustration.
