Seabees

The Seabees are a mobile construction unit. To put it plainly, they are capable of any kind of construction in any kind of environment. In 2017 they celebrated their 75th Anniversary, and the idea was to design posters for each decade they have been around. I was hired to create a poster to represent the Seabees during the 2010 decade.

This project was fun because I was sought out for the job from a museum in Washington DC that saw my work online. I had wiggle room but I was working under strict guidelines, this offered me a chance to play, not only as a designer, but as teacher on what the best design practices are.
I contacted a local Seabee group in Coronado, CA and requested one of their Sailors come to my command. Upon arrival I took a series of photos in our studio of her different kitted outfits and I settled on this image to be the base of the poster.
When I finished the 2010 decade I decided I wanted to work on the 1970s for myself. I looked at 1970s Design styles, interior design color choices, what was popular in pop culture and I created this retro-style poster. The color choices came from a living room image where I sampled the colors. The shapes of the divers came partially from Saul Bass and other fantastic designers of the time period.
