Milestones

- You must consider what is important to your intended audience and deliver the content in the most appropriate format(s).
CHERNOBYL
The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, Soviet Union. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe. The Chernobyl disaster was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history in terms of cost and casualties. It is one of only two classified as a level 7 event (the maximum classification) on the International Nuclear Event Scale.The battle to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles. During the accident itself, 31 people died, and long-term effects such as cancers are still being investigated.
The project started with the brief and then a mind map. This led to various ideas and solutions but the concept of a timeline and a historical event had the most potential and room to explore. I chose Chernobyl for various reasons - I am passionate about history and this is one event that changed the world. There are multiple aspects to the event: the before, during and after and this meant that the project could be explored and documented in many different ways.
The night shift continues the test as normal. The type shows full justification- everything has its place. No one steps out of line. It is strict, structured and organised. But something just isn’t right. The supervisors force the engineers to continue. And suddenly the balancing game they are playing is tipped… And there is nothing they can do. Reactor no. 4 explodes. Darkness. Smoke. Confusion. Disbelief. The typography follows no rules. The night shift sounds the alarms and believes they have restored some order. The justification of the body copy changes to show that this is no longer according to plan. But this is just the start. An invisible poison has escaped and its victims are opening the door, and inviting death in.
Everything is in place...
Reactor no. 4 explodes. Darkness. Smoke. Confusion. Disbelief. The typography follows no rules.

As one survivor said: “Chernobyl never ends…”
ISTD ASSESSMENT REPORT
Typographic Interpretation and Skills: Very effective interpretation. Very good typographic standards, layout, and design. Good typographic detailing.
Research and Development: Good body of research. Evidence of interrogation of the brief; considering a range of alternative initial concepts; testing; concept development.
Comment:
Interesting choice of topic - Chernobyl. The strategy is well constructed and carefully articulated to explain the design decisions. The final outcome is well crafted, the structure is particularly interesting but a variation might have given more emphasis on the changes happening. The contrast of beginning and end of the book is interesting. The restrained use of colour is to be applauded. Very elegant project.
