JOURNEYMANS PIECE | GESELLENSTÜCK
Nikolas Miranda | Germany | July '17
-
In Germany it is common to produce a journeymans piece (Gesellenstück) at the end of your apprenticeship. The students have to design the product themselves, including a technical drawing. After they get the permission to build it, they get about three weeks time to finish their piece of furniture.

I did my best to design a light looking desk, with an extraordinary combination of materials. The hardest part was to integrate complex technology and handy functions, without distracting the look.

-
Materials: - macassar
                 - charred pine wood
                 - steel lacquered with real bronze
                 - CDF covered with linoleum
                 - modular light system
Charred pine wood is used as the front of the drawers.
The clap opens automatically by pushing a hidden button.
It has integrated light and a small clock.
Each drawer illuminates when opened.

Simple but Complex.

The hidden button to open the clap.
A fabric-cable comes out of the bottom of the table (top left) to supply the lights and extra sockets with power.
Drawers (left) | Clap (middle) | Sockets and Cableholder (right)
The metal clap is held by magnets and gives the opportunity to easily access and work on the electronics.
The sides of the drawer are longer than the actual drawer. That way the drawer can be fully extended and accessed.
Special thanks to "Christoph Meinschäfer Fotografie" for taking most of these great pictures
and FABRI GmbH, where I learned and worked for three great years.

Thanks for passing by!

Feedback is very welcome.
