SHARING IDENTITIES MAKING COMMUNITY

The Cañada Real Galiana is a “no man’s land”, historically linked to the activity of transhumance, which over time has undergone many changes that led to its colonization and disorderly occupation that has transformed his original identity.
The Cañada Real exists, yet it does not seem real: stigmatized and hidden, escapes the attention and control, ignoring the laws of property.
The informalisation process is not an invitation to give up design, but rather a stimulus to design in a different way, to give an opportunity to the people. Today, more than 45% of the world population lives in conditions of informality and this figure is set to increase. We can then define the informal city as the twenty-first century city.
My thesis represents an attempt to provide an answer to the stimulus for a different design, which comes from the knowledge, the direct contact with one of the most problematic realities, the informal district in the outskirts of Madrid, the Cañada Rel Galiana.
In summary, the architectural design is centred on a public space, which could lead to new dynamics of aggregation and cooperation between citizens, enhancing multiculturalism and diversity by fostering debate and discussion among various communities.
