arco - artistic coworking

This project aims at creating a co-working in Rome for artistic professionals.

The arch, which was an Etruscan invention, is well known in the urban door of "Volterra and Falerii Novi" along the boundary walls. However, the Romans exploited and developed its architectural potential for building amphitheaters, bridges and aqueducts.

For building the arch, it is necessary to lay the ashlars, namely trapezoidal stone blocks, on a wooden falsework called centring and then closing it at the top with the keystone.

The round arch takes its name from the Latin word sextus, which means to have a perfectly semicircular shape. This was the best geometric structure to express the idea of perfection and later on it became the symbol of the civilization of the city, as well as a celebratory monument: the triumphal arch.

The arch is a line that projects itself from one point to another creating a connection.
Thinking about the architectural needing elements to build the arch, I metaphorically used my project as the keystone that derives from the cooperation and the synergy of the coworkers that embody the architectural ashlars. Furthermore, I have also symbolically translated the concept of weight unloading: just as the ashlars share the weight and unload it on the whole structure, at the same time, in the co-working the work is shared among the workers.
