The Map Is Not The Territory

As part of a live brief with City of Sydney, I designed a typographic installation and wayfinding system for a proposed Cultural Ribbon Foreshore Walk from the Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour to Woolloomooloo.

The brief focused on “layered storytelling” and in response the design proposal was centred around a historical investigation of the urban space. Using the Archives of the City of Sydney resources, maps from the 1800s until present were used as the main storytelling vehicle. By placing names, signatures and design elements from maps into the environment at a large scale, the invisible processes of bureaucracy and discourses regarding land ownership are made visible.

As part of the proposal, I created smaller scale prototypes to demonstrate how the installations would sit in the environment and how people could interact with them.
