Plaster, paint, Matte and Glossy Gesso

ART 132 Fundamentals of Design II
(2 ½ in circumference, 4 in long)

The assignment was to create a sculpture using Plaster. I wanted it to feel old and alien, like an artifact you might find in a tomb of the Egyptians if they had lived on another planet. I first pored the plaster into a small foam cup and waited for it to become semi dry but still damp. Then I carved pieces off a little bit at a time. Once it was carved and dry, I painted the claws black, then I carfully painted the ball area copper so it was only on the area I wanted. After it was dry, I put a layer of thin black paint over the ball area to stick in the carved design, this was to help make it look aged. I also dry brushed some patina color over the copper. Then I sealed the ball with a matte mod podge, and the black claw with a glossy mod podge. This piece won Best 3D Fine Art in the Thomas Nelson Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition of 2016.
