Intuaid is a gestural interface created with the goal of aiding rescue volunteers
to diagnose and treat victims in emergencies at sea while having free-hands.
With the aid of an adhesive controller, the application would guide the volunteer
with video instructions on how to access the level of emergency and
communicate with the team onshore.

We began our research looking to understand the needs and challenges
of volunteers by visiting the rescue station at the north coastal town of Schilksee.
We departed at sea and out there we simulated an emergency on a rescue
boat and started to get acquainted with the restrains of time, the unpredictability
of nature and the stress level of the volunteer.
We also conducted experts Interviews with doctors who volunteer at the station,
from them we got first hand insights about the triage system used in hospital's
emergency rooms, which assigns degrees of urgency to wounds or illnesses
to decide the order of treatment of a large number of patients or casualties.

The app should be able to connect the offshore team with the onshore team to
transmit emergency status of patients and alert them to be ready to take over.

From our observations we found out that due to the lack of qualified personnel
the sea rescue volunteers didn't have the training needed for the job. The
interface would support with instructional videos running on a smart
phone being accessed with a controller to get instructions fast.
We defined three important group qualities for the interface: functionality,
controllability and adaptability.

The controller consisted of two parts a pad and a patch worn in one hand
and should be used together to control the gestures.

Gestures were made with the thumb over the index finger.
The user interface illustrates the steps to finding the video instructions of a hand wound.
Color, form and typography were picked considering the constrains
of emergency situations.
