Synopsis:
Logline: A husband and wife team of marine archaeologists are on a search for sunkenwrecks and evidence of a lost Ice Age civilization in Southeast Asia.

4 am, on the morning of the 5th of January 1842, apprentice navigator, Harry Thompsonhad come on deck to relieve the watch when he was greeted by the sound of wavesbreaking on a reef. The captain was alerted and all able hands worked in vain to preventthe 150 foot long cargo vessel, the Viscount Melbourne from running aground on the reefon the South Luconia Shoals in the South China Sea. They were forced to abandon thevessel and make their way back to Singapore. Eventually the ship would break apart andsink to the bottom under 40 meters of water, languishing in obscurity until its final restingplace was discovered by the Maritime Mysteries Explorers.

The Maritime Mysteries Explorers are a husband and wife team of marine archaeologistsand researchers, Hans and Roze Berekoven. They traded in a rural New South Walesfarm-life for a 19 meter ketch, the Southern Sun, exploring the Southeast Asian waters fora lost Ice-Aged civilisation on the Sunda Shelf. This theory first gain prominence with thepublication of Stephen Oppenheimer’s book, Eden in the East, 12 years ago. All of thisinterest surrounding the ancient history of this region has come to the attention of theIndonesian government, who have even signed an MOU with the Berekoven's to explorethe Sunda Self. In October of 2010, Indonesia hosted an International conference onNature, Philosophy and Culture of Ancient Sunda Civilisation, in cooperation with theIndonesian National Commission for UNESCO, in Bogor, Java. Some of the key guestsattending the conference included Dr. Stephen Oppenheimer, Frank Joseph Hoffrepresenting the late Professor Santos and Hans and Roze Berekoven. Needing to raisefunding to mount the type of exploration that the Indonesian government required, theBerekoven’s have been biding their time searching for sunken wrecks off the Borneocoast in Malaysia.

They became aware of the Viscount Melbourne when it was mentioned in the journals ofSir James Brooke, the White Raj. Further research enable them to pinpoint the reef wherethe ship ran aground. It has been a long and slow process salvaging the artefacts fromthe ship but has also opened up an interest in the stories surrounding the vessel as wellas a few mysteries. Roze has taken on the task of preserving and cataloguing theartefacts and was even invited to the Netherlands to learn the latest techniques. Theartefacts take up an entire room in the flat in Malaysia and will eventually become part ofa maritime museum in Miri, Sarawak.

To cover the exploits of Hans and Roze Berekoven, their search for the lost civilization ofSundaland, the Viscount Melbourne and other undersea mysteries, we are proposing afour part series. This will include some of the wreaks they have uncovered, parallel theirresearch with some of the discoveries around the world and how they relate, drawingparallels and conclusions with evidence found in the Oppenheimer and Santos books aswell as bring in expert testimony from wide variety of other notable sources.
