Sullivant Hall
Viral Takeover

Our task for this project was to bring three separate disciplines into one building. Sullivant Hall was originally the home of the school of dance and the university planned to add the ACCAD program and Cartoon Library. Our one restriction in design was that we had to keep the North facing exterior wall.

This design maintained all of the original exterior limestone walls, except for the center portions of the East and West walls. A new glass structure breaks through those walls and takes over the existing building. The steel and glass structure cuts directly through the building, encompasses all floors, and overtakes the roof. Its function is to generate the new floorplan, connect the public from one side to the university campus on the other, and to draw people in to the galleries and performances within.
Branching Through the Neighborhood
The main goal for this project was to create a food system that would be implemented in the local poor neighborhood of Weinland Park. We were given one square block that contains a few dilapidated buildings. There is a large area to the East side of the site that was formerly used as a factory. It is now open space that will be used for residents' individual gardening plots. A new housing development is coming to the North East part of the neighborhood. Our job was to implement a city farm using the abandoned space that will provide jobs to current residents and attract potential new residents to move into the upcoming housing development. City farming is a new idea that can succeed in Columbus.

Scioto Peninsula
Housing Project
This project was for the redevelopment of downtown Columbus by the Scioto River. We were given an extensive program that included eight hundred residential units to accommodate young and old residents.

Recreation and play were the main themes of this project. There is a one hundred foot wide circulation loop through the site that acts as an outdoor play area and a path to get to the many amenities on the site. It is a wide space that can be used for many purposes. It connects the site to Cosi, an existing science museum across the street. It starts at street level and slowly raises ten feet to the residential plane, where the main entrances to the residential towers are. The center of the loop contains a community center that has a daycare, restaurant, and senior center.

The residential towers are connected at various levels in order to create a second play world. People can move through the connections to explore different playrooms. The playrooms serve several purposes and provide hang out spots for all different sorts of people. Some rooms have games for kids, some are comfortable reading rooms, and others are places for crafts. The intention is that people will explore the different rooms and young and old residents will all interact.
