Artist Statement
The concept of this body of work was to capture transitory objects in an abstract style. In creating this work, I used an abstract artistic practice of covering the camera lens with various objects. This developed into creating my own ‘lens’ made out of temporal material, such as paper receipts, decaying leaves, hair, chewed gum, wax, lipstick and confetti. The various lens covered the camera capturing abstract photographs, of various outdoor and indoor settings. In the image textures and their affects of the lens are the focus of each photograph. I then assembled the photographs in a different sizes and forms, the consistent layout of each set of photographs was created to create consistence as a whole series and highlight the various textures. Though each lens used different textures there was the connecting attribute of the colour pink in each set of photographs. Pink was chosen as it is juxtaposing some of the mediums, they are traditional distasteful stereotype around most the materials which were used whereas pink stereotypically depicts delicate and beauty as features. Through showcasing my work in the style, I took inspiration from Wolfgang Tillmans, through his unique layout and presentation style often drawn from a linking colour. When creating this portfolio I took inspiration from Kurt Schwitters Merzbau. Through the collection of transitory items, making them more permanent. I aimed to take Schwitters idea of his grottos and transform them into lenses for my camera. When creating this portfolio abstract way of capturing and showcasing of temporary items to make them more permanent and given them a type of beauty not typical of these objects.
