Perlin Railroad is a little experiment made with Flash. I was trying to procedurally generate scenery that resembled a northern mountain range. The silhouette shapes are derived from a perlin noise field at a specific z depth. A normal map is also extruded from the field and projected onto the silhouette with some distortion. A set of mountain-texture brushes I made are randomly stamped into the faces to give it more realistic surface. Finally, a particle simulation drops 'snow painters' along the peaks which fall down the steep face, following the contours of the normal map leaving white trails until they expire.
The horizontal mouse position changes the time of day. Vertical position sets layer height.
