This is a character study I worked on for a VR demo using Lytro's VR technology. The characters are meant to be nomadic and of a fantasy universe. I based the human character on someone I know and decided to incorporate photogrammetry into the process as an alternative means of 3D modelling and texturing. (I also just wanted to see how it would affect my workflow). The person in question also has a fantastic array of tattoos that I wanted for my character.
The initial design by Megan McNiece . The character was meant to have some glowing elements (hence the scaly area) but I decided later on that it was not necessary.
The photogrammetry process! I used a white room to take the pics for even light distribution and used Autodesk's 123D Catch and photoScan to process the images. In the end, photoScan was my choice as I had more control over camera placement as well as topology. Once I gained my mesh, I used Wrap3 to retopologize and extract the texture as shown in the video below.
The whole character mesh with texture work.
I used projection mapping to place the tattoos onto the character.
