A Union client sought to improve their staff and members on-site facilities. Given the limitations of the existing 4 storey heritage warehouse which was fully occupied , the only space capable of modification was on the roof. The current building envelope was less than the sites current planning potential.
After structural engineering investigations , it was concluded that the hybrid structure [ external load bearing shell and large scale ironbark post and beam internal] could take a light weight modular addition.
The scheme evolved to a concept where by a two module street structure could be lifted from a rear lane to bear on the external walls and overspan the existing metal deck. A skillion roof was then to be erected and an apron of timber decking linking it to the buildings core and providing safe fire egress to an extended fire stair.
