Bodoni: a typographical brochure

Project brief

This project has been developed during the Editorial Design course at Politecnico di Milano.
The brief was to design a brochure about a type designer or a graphic designer, using only typography to communicate the author's life and work. The use of illustrations or photographic images in the brochure was not allowed.

Project features

The open format size is requested to be equivalent to an A3-size sheet (42 x 29.7 cm); it could be folded 2 times (for a brochure of 8 pages) or 3 times (12 pages).
The brochure could be print by using only 2 inks chosen form the four available quadrichromy printing inks (C_Cyan, M_Magenta, Y_Yellow, K_Black).
The chosen author is Giambattista Bodoni (1740 – 1813), a famous italian type designer and book printer. Brochure's layout and design was designed to suggest Bodoni's neoclassical style, which consist in a rigorous and austere page layout, and a widely use of hierarchy on the texts.
According to the request, I used only 2 printing inks, Magenta (M) and Black (K). By mixing the two inks, it has been possible to expand the color palette and to have 4 main colors on the brochure: Black, Magenta, dark Magenta and white (the paper's color).

The folded format is 99 x 210 cm. On the front page I designed a title. Opening it one time, you have 3 pages in which there is a quotation by G. Bodoni, composed with different Bodonians typefaces. Opening it again, you can find a section about Bodoni's life and work, and another section with a short analysis about Bodoni's typefaces. The open format of the brochure is an A3-size paper (42 x 29,7 cm).
