Early this year I applied to take part in a project called "Art 2 End Slavery" run by Awareness Against Human Trafficking (HAART) a nongovernmental organization working to end human trafficking in Kenya. The task was to come up with artworks that can raise awareness and speak on the issue of Human Trafficking which has become rampant in East Africa. I was able to come up with these 3 artworks:
"Lamenting"
Lamenting is a story of a victim and her cry for freedom. The expression of stress and despair on her face tells us how desperate she is for a change, for safety, for freedom, for healing, for peace... The writings on her face portray her inner most thoughts and cries... I wanted to provoke audience to feel a sense of empathy for her so strong that they will run to her rescue.
"Insurance Policy"
an Illustration that brings awareness to the black market trade of organ harvesting. Every year hundreds of thousands of victims are abducted from their homes and harvested of their organs which are then sold in the black market. The price of a human organ can range from $90,000 to as high as $300,000. The harvesting of an organ leaves the victim with many medical complications and in many times results in death.
"Hidden Cargo"
an illustration that seeks to bring awareness to the corruption and illegal transportation of human beings across borders via flight, land and sea. My hope is for people to realise the reality of the situation and take action by holding their government border security accountable and support organisations that seek to stop this crime.
The artworks are still available in the form of prints, 50% of the proceeds go to HAART and will be used in stopping human trafficking.
I was given the Survivors choice award:) the fam was there to accept it on my behalf.
