Seaside Museum Sozopol/Bulgaria

Nature is what drives and inspires us to think, design and create, every single day. The more unique the place is, the vaster and more boundless the human thought becomes.

This is a project truly inspired by the site’s specifics and the atmosphere of the place. The site lies (is located) at the heart and soul of Sozopol - it's old town part, more specifically the surrounding cliffs.
If we take a look back in time, we could see the countless geological changes that have shaped the Earth to its current form. The power and pressure of the sea slowly chip away the shore rocks standing. The concept of the form making is to rebuild and complete the shore rocks form as it once was.
The materials used in the project are practically the same as those used in the traditional Sozopol house - stone from beneath and wood from above. The building represents a modern view of the two materials. Gabions are used for the ground lower part and transparent wooden construction for the upper volume.
The museum has five large halls accordant and flowing into one another with no large separation between them. They are organized around an “inner court”- а glass capsule capturing a part of the sea and the cliffs. Each hall stands one layer below following the terrain.
The interior space is easy to regroup and organize thanks to the modular steel frames on the ceiling. Each frame carries a curtain allowing the halls to divide and lead the people in specific direction.
The connection with nature in both the exterior and interior is an important part of the concept. Thereby the rocks inside are kept and maintained. The first recreation/inspiration space (-5.00m.) is situated around them. That's the end of the tour.
Тhe museum has an open-for-tourists “panorama balcony”, inspired by seaside urban docks around the world ( 0.00m.). It offers a place to rest, meet, communicate and ends with a modern art gallery.
The balcony leads to the last part of the complex - the roof terrace. It represents the upper wooden part of the traditional house .The construction is entirely from precast modular units. It creates a feeling of transparency and provides shading for the cafe/bar, the outdoor exhibition space, and the lecture/movies/performance/events hall situated beneath it.
