[University of Greenwich - Competition Brief; ISTD typographic renovation]
“The Waitress” discovers storytelling in a new form; it intriguesthe reader and makes them want to find out further details. The way I saw it, thestory should be embody a way that allows the words to come alive and feel more associatedwith the characters. I generated this by creating a decorative and experimentaltypographic book which explores the close bond of the two prominent characters,Marie and the Chair. It shows the fragility of Marie and her shy and reservednature and how the chair brings out a new side to her and other characters inthe book.

By doing so this led me to consider the use of the doublepage spread, typographic hierarchy and format amongst many other designmechanics used within the modern magazine. Patterns are used through thepublication and I used a wallpaper image from William Morris to echo the richtextiles and fashion elements of the story, this reflected my colour choicesfor the pages. I used the technique of French folding instead of thetraditional single page. This is due to the two characters being joinedtogether and creating something new and interesting.

For this brief I was asked to use the text of 'The Waitress' by Jack Zipes and invest it within the design and experimentation of the magazine.
