New Zealanders Now is an exhibition aiming to break the negative connotations around the term ‘refugee’ by celebrating the people behind the label. The exhibition provides a window into the present lives of former refugees who have become New Zealanders, with striking, candid portraits, each paired with a short story from their past.
Teaming up with the Auckland Refugee Community Coalition (ARCC), Amnesty International and photographer, Nando Azevedo, we created the promotional marketing material for the exhibition and a high-quality coffee table book of prints.
Using a selection of portraits from the series with a polaroid-style treatment across the campaign material creates a ‘mini exhibition’ when items are displayed together.
Publishing the collection as a hardcover book allowed the conversation to continue beyond the exhibition, with many copies of the book being sold at the exhibition opening night. Restrained, minimalist design used throughout the book and across all promotional material kept the focus on the powerful black and white imagery. Finished to a high standard on smooth satin stock, the New Zealanders Now book is valued commemoration of the exhibition.
