Final Major Project - "Bright Student"

Project Synopsis

For my Final Major Project I created a concept with the intent to act as an essential student guide. The target audience was for students of all years, but mainly for Fresher's - containing introductory information about life at University as well as information that the audience can jump into. The persona of the concept was to be humorous and satirical to enhance its approachability of the demographic. Information is conveyed graphically in this format rather than textually and statistically as this could be considered boring.

Project Outcomes

The outcomes for the project were as follows; a book, covering the following categories: cooking, studying, social life, budgeting and health & fitness. The second outcome was an App to extend the usability of the concepts with an interactive platform – giving the audience a practical way to engage in tasks, features, and tools to better their time as a student. The App also gives users access to exclusive discounts and vouchers through a subscription package – leading onto the final outcome – a magazine, that would be posted to subscribers each month. The Magazines extend on the information already available in the book, for example, offering new recipes and methods, new budgeting and studying tips etc. and to fund the project, offer pages of vouchers and discounts as a reward for subscribing to the service.

Book

The book is the foundation of the product as it acts as the starting point for anyone who uses it. It covers; cooking, studying, social life, budgeting and health & fitness. Each category is split into sub-categories that inform on different aspects of each one respectively.

Magazine

The magazine acts as an extension to the book for people who buy a subscription. It does this by offering new recipes and methods, different budgeting and health & fitness tips such as workout plans and exercises, and notification of popular events they could go to, for example a concert of a famous band or show performed by a popular comedian. It also offers exclusive vouchers and discounts in the back page as a way to reward the user for subscribing and to further fund the product.
App

The App further expands on the information covered within the book and magazines. By using the platform to its advantage, it offers interactive engagement features to make life easier. The key features it includes are;

A food planner where the user can add meals to specific slots of each day (custom meals can be made) to produce a shopping list of their weekly shop - this prevents overspending on items they don't require.

A budget calculator that allows users to input their income and expenditures and make it easier to track and manage by graphically communicating how much they spend, where they spend it etc. and continues to suggest options that can save money.

A Sugar Scanner which allows the user to scan barcodes of products they buy and returns data on how much sugar it contains. It informs with percentages of the recommended daily sugar intake for each gender and graphically compares them to units such as sugar cubes and tea spoons.

A “Voucher Catcher” which offers fitness related vouchers and discounts such as gym memberships and sportswear, but there’s a catch – you must complete a challenge that consists of, for example; X amount of steps in X amount of time.
