Rebel With A Cause

Street Stage is a complex phenomenon. When it comes to evaluating or assessing the character of a city, graffiti is always subject to a contestation; a cliche debate that questions whether graffiti is a vandalist act or an expression of artistic energy."Within and Against" might be the best phrase that explain the position of street art in today's post-industrialist capitalism: It renders palpable the very contradiction of the urban environment that are inhabited by street art. Walls are clearly visible to the public, yet at the same time, there's a sense of alienation ignited by the inaccessibility for the public to engage with those walls. Street art tries to challenge this presuppositions in a very subversive manner, directly posing the fundamental question: Who deserves the right to meddle with the face of OUR city? Is it just the legal owner of the building, or are there any room for public participations?". Street Stage Festival is an attempt to recognize and reconcile the opposing views that existed beforehand: to recognize the creative potential of the public yet at the same time tries to respect the concept of property ownership. This May, Housethehouse organizes Bandung's first International Street Art Festival. Graffiti, breakdance and other street art disciplines will play a central role. International artists alongside with local artists will engage with the local community via exhibitions, performances and workshops. For this 9-day long celebration of creativity.
